“Montreal Fall Wind” WIP1

I hope you guys will enjoy the next set of WIPs! They are complex and a technique I haven’t used in a long time.

This image was originally created for the Montreal World Film Festival as a submission for their poster contest. It didn`t win, and I had to post-pone posting my WIPs here.

I tried to create a less masculine man and a less feminine woman, maybe because I identify with it and maybe because it`s more of a challenge. In any case, people confuse the gender of the two and that`s fine by me.

The pencils.

Metallic Taste Cover WIP2

0098

Sorry I just missed a whole month of posts despite it being a very busy time. Birthday, holidays. Any time I had free went directly to working on artwork.

Here’s the pose penciled for the cover, as previously discussed in the other post.  Here’s a second shot to make up for this being a pencil and the time break. I hope these look ok since I’m using my old laptop.

MT Cover Research Sketch

Metallic Taste Cover WIP1

So I found this rather cool sculpture the other night on This Is Colossal. What I like about his work, other than it has a classical and very striking aesthetic, is that it actually reminds me a lot of what I used to dream about when I was a kid. I used to have dreams that behind our plastered dry-wall, there may be another universe, kind of the way in video games you can go beyond wall boundaries and end up floating in dead space. In my dreams, I used to find people or animals there. When those dreams became nightmares, people would get stuck, severed in a portal between two worlds – a lot like these sculptures.

So I took these as inspiration, and especially how the drop shadows created unique shapes. This one is very much like a Batman symbol or wings. I used this as inspiration for my forever-time-consuming comic book’s cover. Here you have my “research” sketches. I do minimal research when I have a clear idea and comp sketches with notes, because I do forget my ideas nowadays with the amount of distractions there are in everyday life. I use these values and gesture sketches directly in my drawing instead of going back to photos – it is how I filter out information.

MT Cover Research SketchI wanted my cover to be vague and more about my second main character than the one featured in the comic. I don’t want a cover that gives away plot or sees too far into the future plot. I want something more mysterious and based on emotion.

As a sidenote, my comic book that has been taking forever and a half is actually FINISHED. Get ready to buy it online or buy it at the Montreal Comic Con, as we will be there!

Life Drawings for Sale & Suggestions Taking Care of Original Art

0082

If you’ve been to my website in this past year, you will be familiar with these. This is my life drawing works from the past year. I’m looking to sell the ORIGINALS. If you’re interested in buying any of these (or any art for that matter), use this contact form on my site.

Here are prices, which DO NOT include shipping. When contacting me, be prepared to give me your address so I can calculate shipping and bill an all inclusive invoice. The paired images – I suggest you buy them together as a set because they go together, and I will prioritize people who want to buy sets.

About the work

Originals are all on 9″x12″ watercolour paper done with fade proof watercolours. They are unframed– BUT you can find inexpensive frames of these dimensions in most stores for very, very cheap (Amazon – $5-10). It’s not worth getting custom framing for this unless you’re going all the way and getting these vacuum sealed with UV protected glass. I suggest a slightly larger white frame for the lighter pieces, and a larger dark frame for ones with more black.

Here are a few quicker sketches. These have more irregular dimensions and might need to be trimmed down, but they are all done on the same paper with the same watercolours. These would be nice pieces for small area decorations, like a small bathroom or space in the kitchen.

SFX Strips WIP

0077

This is an “exercise” collaboration I am doing with my best artist friend person, Natasha Petras. It’s a comic strip project where the narrative is driven by sound effects while simultaneously being completely abstract. I’m using sepia ink here, which has a different effect. I coloured this in Photoshop using masking layers.

Here’s the tumblr post. I suggest follow me or carryalaser if you’re interested in keeping track of this project. We’re thinking of potentially printing this in a little book…maybe selling it at a comic con (stay tuned?).

Small Panels WIP1

0074

Here’s a few more panels for my comic…that’s taking forever. As I assemble it, I am realizing that I am getting way too detailed in the smaller images. It looks fine, but there’s going to be inconsistent line weight in my comic and inconsistent levels of detail. I guess to work with the inconsistency, I have not much more left to do than make it more inconsistent by making panels more abstract. So instead of using perspective in the bottom panel here, I’m just going by a layout made with tape. Hey, I can do whatever I want.

Tips on Commissions

0071

As I’m uploading these, I am realizing how destroyed my laptop is. I can’t see the watermark I placed on this image because the lighter values in my screen bleed out to white. Anyway, today I’d like to talk about COMMISSIONS (again)! This is a new commission I recently finished, and I will be putting it up on my site soon with more WIP updates. It was for an individual into gaming to use on a profile. I get a lot of individual commissions by average people (as in, not institutions or corporations) and I’m pretty average myself – I know where everyone is coming from.

I want to use this person as an example of a great commissioner: They came to me with a clear idea of what they needed, what dimensions, they had a reasonable range of how much they were willing to pay,  they even had references on hand, and overall were co-operative and respectful. They paid immediately. Beautiful.

I have a lot of problematic inquiries.

Pencils for Pokemon Fanart

At one point, I did this Pokemon fanart when I felt really uninspired to do any other artwork. It’s the Weavile from my Pokemon Platinum game using Dark Pulse…least how I imagined it. This is a factor I really miss from old 2D games. 3D pushes so far for realism that there is little left to the imagination, and often (for me), the enjoyment I get out of a game is partially my own input into the visuals and story. When I play some 3D games, I feel like I am just filling out a To-Do list of goals. I’m not even complaining about linear games either (most old 2D games are super linear, yet somehow more fun?). I get really bored in sand-box games too.
